Moxieland is built.
1928
The bottling plant is located in the former Burton Brewery at 74 Heath Street. Created by Dr. Augustin Thompson in Lowell in 1884, Moxie Nerve Food was a patent medicine derived from the gentian root that was repackaged as a soft drink after the Pure Food and Drug Act was passed in 1906. It outsells Coca-Cola in the 1920s and is subsequently endorsed by Red Sox star Ted Williams. The company’s headquarters are located on Haverhill Street. The plant closes in 1953, is demolished in 1954, and the drink is subsequently bottled in Needham and then New Hampshire. Moxie is named the official soft drink of the state of Maine in 2005, and the company is purchased by Coca Cola in 2018.
